Summer is just around the corner.
Hammock and outdoor reading – HERE WE COME!
Don’t forget to sign up for the summer reading program at the public library!
We have compiled our annual summer reading recommendations for all grades. They are posted at the District Libraries site (go to District Technology in the box on the Main School Page and click on District Libraries). They are also posted at each library’s home page. The lists are meant to be used for reading suggestions only. You know your child best and can best determine the appropriateness of particular titles. For more booklists, logon to the Internet and check out this link from the American Library Association: http://www.ala.org/yalsa/booklists/. Happy Summer Reading!
JSHS News
We are wrapping up another great (and incredibly quick!) year in the JSHS library. The seniors completed a research project in English 12 and we spent time reinforcing skills in citing sources and avoiding plagiarism.
Mrs. Mann wants seniors to remember two great resources to use in college when faced with a research project: The OWL at Purdue (find it at the JSHS library home page), AND, if you have a question, start at the library!! Your college librarians will be happy to answer all your questions and help you with your research – utilize them!
Grimshaw News
Grimshaw students are learning never to judge a book by its movie during the month of June. Featured stories include the Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. We wish you a safe and fun filled summer. Remember, reading can take you anywhere you want to be.
ONS News
Mrs. Fisher is excited about the Scholastic Book Fair that is coming to ONS on Wednesday, May 26th and Thursday, May 27th. The Fair will have a variety of current literature for preschoolers through middle school ages. Parents and students may come to the cultural center and look at their leisure. Starting on Tuesday May 18, Mrs. Fisher is going to have a reading contest called, “Get Caught Reading”. Mrs. Fisher will be going around school the week of May 18th to see who’s reading. If you get caught, she will take your picture and hang it up around the school. The students who have been caught reading will be eligible for a drawing on Tuesday May 25th. Three lucky students will win a ten dollar coupon they can use at the Book Fair. So students, be sure you let Mrs. Fisher know you are reading so you can “Get Caught Reading”.
What We’re Reading…
Mrs. Mann really enjoyed a new graphic novel, Into the Volcano, by Don Wood. Fans of the Bone series by Jeff Smith won’t be disappointed by the illustrations or this suspenseful tale. It’s a lot longer than a Bone book, but the story is full of action and suspense and keeps you at the edge of your seat. Reluctant readers will find this one particularly appealing. (grades 7 and up).
Mrs. Revette is reading Teacher Man by Frank McCourt, and Mrs. Feliu is reading Bookmarked for Death by Lorna Barrett.
