Gingerbread House

December 10, 2012

ONS-
Mrs. Thornton’s Kindergarten classroom completed their 2012 version of a gingerbread house for the Erie Canal Museum. What makes their gingerbread special is that it is a longhouse.

“It is a tradition now, this is our sixth year participating,” stated Mrs. Thornton. “I felt that it is a great way to talk about rich subjects such as self ,family, longhouse and environment  with the kids. This year we were able to connect it to our water unit. Plus it is a terrific opportunity to use Onondaga language to describe the scenes with the students.”

In fact since Mrs. Thornton began making gingerbread longhouses, she has only missed the event once due to lack of funding last year. “I really think that it is an important event to continue,” added Mrs. Thornton. “It is such a fun project as everyone wants to lend a hand. We’ve had some great candy ideas to make our gingerbread house work.”

The students were enthusiastic about their contributions.
One student, Aubrie exclaimed, “I helped make dirt out of cereal and Parker made orange pumpkins.”

Mykala added, “I liked making the long house mostly because I go to the longhouse.”

The project culminates with a visit to the museum to see their work displayed among all the other gingerbread creations. This year when they visit, the kindergarten class will see that their work has been awarded first place!

If you would like to see the ONS Kindergarten’s gingerbread house, you can visit the Erie Canal Museum on 318 Erie Boulevard, Monday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm.
