Students Preparing Apple Pies Ahead of Apple Festival Students Preparing Apple Pies Ahead of Apple Festival: This week, students from Ms. Charpentier’s Culinary Arts class has been baking apple pies in anticipation of this weekend’s 46 th Annual LaFayette Apple Festival . For the 2018 event, nearly 60 culinary students are combining their efforts to produce delicious apple pies for the contest. The goal? Have 13 tasty fall pies ready for judging by Friday night. LaFayette’s district staff members were invited to partake in a test run of the pies on Tuesday, trying out the students’ first effort and offering constructive feedback as needed. The recipe will be fine-tuned over Wednesday and Thursday, before ultimately being brought to the judges table on Friday evening. Grimshaw Third-Grader Helping Her Friends and Community Grimshaw Third-Grader Helping Her Friends and Community: On Sept. 27, Grimshaw Elementary third-grader Rylee Andersen was featured on News Channel 9 thanks to her selfless work in support of the “Backpack Buddies” project.   Rylee was inspired by a feature on the television show “Little Big Shots,” whereby a young man sought to help his community by providing backpacks full of food to those in need. If it worked for that community, what might Rylee be able to do to help the LaFayette community, in turn? After consulting with her then-second grade teacher Mrs. Kolbeck, Rylee approached Grimshaw principal Jennifer Crowley about doing something to help students and families in need, and out of this collaboration, Backpack Buddies was born. Lockdown Drill Thursday, September 20, 2018 Lockdown Drill Thursday, September 20, 2018: Good Morning - This is Jeremy Belfield, Superintendent for LaFayette Central Schools. Today is Thursday September 20, 2018. I am calling all families to inform about our planned lock down drill that occurred today at approximately 9:00 AM.   New York State requires school districts to perform regularly scheduled lock down drills. A lock down is used to secure school buildings and grounds during incidents that pose an immediate threat in or around the school. Again, I would like to emphasize that today’s exercise was a planned drill. During the lockdown drill, students and staff remain locked inside of the classroom until cleared by school personnel. Press Release - August 24th 2018 Press Release - August 24th 2018: CNY Central featured the following news story-  "Plans to Use Federal Funds to Arm Teachers" - following a visit to the LaFayette CSD Board of Education meeting on Thursday August 23, 2018. This headline did not accurately reflect the content covered at Thursday’s board meeting.   To be clear, LaFayette CSD did not discuss using federal funds to arm teachers during Thursday’s board meeting.   A public hearing was held on our emergency response plan and there was a discussion on the district's recent efforts relative to school safety. New York State Education Law requires that public schools complete a variety of emergency response practice drills throughout the school year.   Lock down drills allow students and staff to practice securing the school building during incidents that pose an immediate threat in or around the school.   Again, today was a practice emergency drill. Important Message from Superintendent Belfield Important Message from Superintendent Belfield: May 4, 2018 Dear Families:    I am writing to inform you of a minor bus incident that occurred yesterday afternoon, May 3, 2018 at approximately 2:40 PM. One of our buses arrived at LaFayette Jr/Sr High School after picking up students from Grimshaw Elementary for afternoon dismissal. The driver shut off the bus and attempted to engage the parking brake. The driver believed that the parking brake was fully engaged and left the driver’s seat to perform the end of trip safety checks and turn off the child find reminder alarm, which is located in the rear of the vehicle. The driver did not realize that the parking brake was not fully engaged and the bus began to roll forward.
