Spintops
November 7, 2010

Onondaga Nation - How does science affect how things are made? The students in the third grade found out when they made spintops in Art/MST class with Mr. Capella.

The goal was for the students to create a top and try to make revisions to it to get it to spin the longest. The students learned to understand how science terms like friction, balance, and centrifugal force can be manipilated to get their top to spin the longest. The students also learned how ergonomics, the science that shapes things to the human body, could be used to help them fit the tops handle to their hand.

Finally it was time to test them in the lunch room where the floor is very smooth.

Trevor said of making the spintops, "I liked the project.  The tops were really fun to make!"

And fun to test too!
